What happens after I file a hail claim on my roof?

After you file, your insurance company sends an adjuster to inspect the damage and write an estimate. With most replacement cost policies, the insurance company pays the actual cash value first, minus your deductible. Once the work is complete, the remaining depreciation is usually released. Receiving two checks is normal.

Start with a roof inspection

Before you file a claim, it helps to know whether your roof has storm damage. A roof inspection shows what was damaged and where.

Hail damage is often hard to see from the ground, so an inspection is the best way to find out whether a claim makes sense.

The adjuster’s inspection

After you file, your insurance company sends an adjuster to inspect your property. The adjuster checks each slope of the roof for damage and writes an estimate of the repairs the policy will cover.

The adjuster’s estimate is what the rest of the claim is based on, so it should include all of the storm damage.

Actual cash value and replacement cost

Many Texas homeowners policies pay replacement cost value. With these policies, the insurance company first pays the actual cash value, which is the estimate minus depreciation and your deductible.

After the work is finished and the final invoice is submitted, the insurance company releases the recoverable depreciation. If your policy pays actual cash value only, there is no second payment, so it is worth checking your policy before the work begins.

If you have a mortgage, your lender may be named on the insurance check and may have its own process for releasing the funds.

What is a supplement?

A supplement is a request to add items to the approved claim. Supplements are common when damage is found after the old roof is removed, or when an item was left out of the original estimate.
